Mission Statement

To enhance and expand the urban forest by teaching the people of our community to plant and care for trees.

About This Cause

Tree Davis, founded in 1992, is a vibrant non-profit organization with over two hundred active members that builds community through activities that enhance and expand the urban tree canopy in our region. In 2014, Tree Davis engaged in a competitive state grant application process and was granted funds to engage with under-served communities in West Sacramento and train 1,000 residents in the planting and care of free shade trees. In 2017, Tree Davis joined forces with the City of Woodland and the Woodland Tree Foundation to administer another state grant aimed at improving municipal urban forest management and the planting of over 1,200 trees in residential and public spaces. Today Tree Davis is planting 1,000 trees in under-canopied neighborhoods in Davis and assisting with the creation of a 40-year Urban Forest Management Plan. Tree Davis operates across the Sacramento Valley region to provide education and training on tree planting and tree care, as well as technical information on the indispensable environmental and human health benefits of mature shade trees. Our work brings community members together in neighborhood stewardship efforts. To keep members connected between planting events, Tree Davis also publishes a quarterly newsletter with news of our recent accomplishments and upcoming events/initiatives. At the center of our values is inspiring the people of our community to take pride and ownership in our urban canopy, which improves the lives and livelihoods of current and future generations. Studies show that planting a tree in an urban setting is one of the highest-impact actions one can take to improve human lives and ecological health because the benefits of doing so are broad and long-lasting. For example, urban trees bring energy and cost savings to residents, they provide jobs (over 60,000 in CA alone) and strengthen local economies, create safer communities, and add value to residential homes. Trees filter and intercept storm water, reducing pollution-laden run-off in local watersheds and improve air quality, helping humans avoid 670,000 instances of acute respiratory symptoms every year, nationwide. Trees help mitigate the impacts of global climate change by sequestering carbon and providing shade -- which can provide temperature relief of around 30 degrees Fahrenheit -- in urban heat islands. Increased biodiversity in urban settings goes hand-in-hand with increased tree canopy because trees improve soil, air, and water quality as well as habitat for birds, amphibians, mammals, and invertebrates. Trees also provide a multitude of human health and wellness enhancements including a desirable environment for physical activity and interaction between neighbors, reduced symptoms of ADHD, and improved concentration in schools, reduced exposure to UV radiation, and improved overall physical, mental, and social well-being. Through our tree planting efforts, Tree Davis engages and inspires action in community members of the Yolo County region by creating tangible, high-impact learning opportunities for volunteers and students that empower them with knowledge, skills, and abilities to be advocates of the urban forest and leaders in their communities throughout their lives. Unlike traditional "top-down" assistance programs for under-served communities, Tree Davis facilitates meaningful relationships between individuals and groups to bring about changes in local environmental and human health circumstances that last longer than an election or budget cycle. The change we seek is on the timescale of a hundred years or more -- the potential lifespan of a tree. We bring community groups, schools, local/state/federal political leaders and business professionals together to provide urban forest-oriented workshops, work parties, advocacy training, and experiential education events that encourage individuals to combine resources and work together to bring the benefits of urban trees to bear on the ecological and public health challenges in their neighborhoods. By building neighbor-to-neighbor, neighborhood-to-city and city-to-region relationships; educating volunteers and students about the value of trees and organizing urban greening work parties, Tree Davis is building stronger, healthier and more beautiful communities, one tree at a time. Please join us by donating to help plant trees and grow community!
