Mission Statement

Greenlining is the solution to redlining. We advance economic opportunity and empowerment for people of color through advocacy, community and coalition building, research, and leadership development. We envision a nation where race is never a barrier to economic opportunity and communities of color thrive.

About This Cause

In the mid 1970’s a group of grassroots leaders from the African American, Asian American, Latino, and disabled communities came together around a new and visionary set of ideas: Instead of simply fighting institutionalized discrimination and redlining, we should work to proactively bring investments and opportunity into our communities. Instead of redlining, we would work to greenline opportunities for low-income and communities of color. The Greenlining Coalition is perhaps the country’s oldest and most diverse coalition of Asian/Pacific Islander, African American, and Latino community leaders organized around a common purpose and a struggle. Beyond ethnic diversity, the coalition represents diverse constituencies and includes faith-based organizations, minority business associations, community development corporations, health advocates, environmental justice advocates, traditional civil rights organizations, and ethnic media outlets. We hold firm to the belief that diverse communities are a source of unrealized assets and strength, and that this diversity leads to greater effectiveness. Acting from this principle, we ensure that community voices are participating in major policy debates by building diverse coalitions of cross-sector leaders that work together to advance solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. Our uniqueness lies in our multifaceted approach, a holistic view that connects multiple policy areas in the common cause of equity and justice. Our program areas are: • Bridges To Health works to make good health accessible to all communities regardless of zip code or income level. • Economic Equity, Greenlining’s first program area, aims to close the racial wealth gap that plagues our nation and stunts our economic potential. • Energy makes sure that something as essential as our energy sources and the utilities that provide them are working for the betterment of all, and actively serving to improve the quality of life of our communities. • Environmental Equity solves poverty and pollution by ensuring that the needs of communities of color are considered in policymaking and implementation. • Telecommunications & Technology ensures that our communities have access to the technology and communication services vital to participating in the 21st century. • The Greenlining Leadership Academy fulfills one of our central missions to train the next generation of leaders to continue to advocate for the needs of underserved communities. Some of the key products coming out of Greenlining include • Public awareness and research on the issues facing communities of color; • Increased civic participation of communities of color; • New leaders from diverse communities are ready to take on high level positions in business, government, and the non-profit sector; and • Public and private policies create opportunities for communities of color.
