Mission Statement
The mission of Fortune School of Education (Fortune School) is to graduate high-achieving students of good character prepared for college and citizenship in a democratic society.
About This Cause
Fortune School of Education, established in 1989, provides preparation programs to fill the “pipeline” of educators needed in today’s schools. It was the brainchild of Dr. Rex Fortune, who as a school superintendent, saw an opportunity to bring more diverse teaching candidates into public schools, especially in the shortage areas of science and mathematics instruction. Under the current leadership of Margaret Fortune, Fortune School of Education has expanded to include a system of tuition-free, college preparatory, public charter schools. Located in San Bernardino and Sacramento, which boast the second and third highest Black student populations in California, the schools are focused on closing the African American achievement gap. Fortune School is the only countywide charter school network in the Sacramento region and operates seven schools. One school is located in San Bernardino and the remaining six schools are located in the Greater Sacramento Area. The newest of these schools opened in August 2017 and is the first early college high school in the Greater Sacramento Area where students will have the opportunity to graduate after four years with both a high school diploma and their A.A. Degree.
