Mission Statement
As the representative organization for Institutional Research, Planning, and Effectiveness (IRPE) professionals in the California Community Colleges (CCC) system, the RP Group strengthens the ability of CCC to discover and undertake high-quality research, planning, and assessments that improve evidence-based decision-making, institutional effectiveness, and success for all students.
About This Cause
The Research and Planning Group for California Community Colleges (The RP Group) was formed in 1992 to advocate for and support the use of data and evidence to illuminate effective policy and practice across our state’s community colleges. We are a nonprofit, nonpartisan team made up of a dedicated Board of Directors and staff, working together with a shared and resolute goal: to increase the success of California Community College (CCC) students by supporting a movement toward student-centered reform focused on institutional equity and social justice. The RP Group is resolute in our ambition to reduce persistent inequities that exist for historically marginalized BIPOC (black, Indigenous, and people of color) community college students. Through collaboration and a commitment to authenticity and quality, our work focuses on promoting inspired futures for California Community College students in important areas such as equity, success, completion, and employment. These efforts are evident in a variety of forms, including undertaking foundational research and evaluation projects designed to uncover barriers to and facilitators of success for students; providing technical assistance and professional development for CCC practitioners. Our research projects range from small pilots at individual colleges to statewide surveys and data analysis. Our organization is led by Dr. Darla Cooper, a woman of color with over 30 years in research throughout the US. The RP Group also hosts numerous workshops, webinars, and two statewide conferences each year for CCC practitioners. Our annual Strengthening Student Success Conference (https://rpgroup.org/Events/Strengthening-Student-Success/overview) provides a unique opportunity for a wide cross-section of CCC professionals to engage each other on strategies to increase equitable outcomes, institutional effectiveness, leadership capacity, and ultimately improving student success. This conference is the first of its kind in the CCC system designed to bring diverse stakeholder groups from instruction, student services, and institutional research together in support of a systems approach to positively impact student success. Additionally, our annual RP Conference (https://rpgroup.org/Events/RP-Conference-IRPE/Overview) is the largest gathering of researchers and planners in the CCC system to exchange local approaches to common issues, learn about the latest developments in the field, and strengthen relationships within our community.
