Mission Statement
Children's Fairyland is a magical fantasy world for young children to create, imagine, play and learn. Located on the shores of Lake Merritt, Fairyland will celebrate 65 years as a renowned family destination in 2015. Through fairy tales, fantasy sets, performing arts, gentle farm animals and special programs Fairyland helps children develop language and motor skills in fun and organic ways. In addition to storybook sets and Talking Storybook Boxes (accessed by the iconic Magic Key), Fairyland offers four child-size rides, tunnels to explore, mazes to discover, slides to navigate, climbing structures, an Old West town and a pirate ship. Fairyland presents puppet shows, story tellers, special performers and its own Children’s Theatre performances throughout the year. Donations to Fairyland help keep admission fees affordable and free or subsidized for children and families from underserved communities.
About This Cause
Childrens' Fairyland is a renowned storybook park dedicated to stimulating a child's imagination, creativity and desire to learn. Founded in 1950, Fairyland was designed to provide a safe, child-centered place of peace and beauty, complete with gardens, gentle farm animals and storybook-themed sets in which urban children could play and learn. Over the last 65 years, Fairyland has brought joy to millions of children. Hundreds of parks were built to try to copy Fairyland's magic, including the most famous amusement parks in the world, but where many were not able to survive, Fairyland continues to retain its relevance. Owned and previously operated by the City of Oakland, Fairyland became a nonprofit corporation in 1994 to help ensure long-term economic stability. Over the past decade, Fairyland has made significant changes to its programming goals, leveraging the park's unique resources to serve the community's most underserved children and families. Through Fairyland's Outreach Program, partnerships have been established with more than 130 community organizations and more than 15,000 children were served last year with free or subsidized programs.
