SAN FRANCISCO SENIOR AND DISABILITY ACTION

San Francisco, California, 94103-2628 United States

Mission Statement

San Francisco Senior and Disability Action (SDA) educates and mobilizes seniors and people with disabilities to secure individual rights and social justice. Through individual support and collective action, we work together to create a city and world in which seniors and people with disabilities can live well and safely. Working primarily with low-income seniors and disabled people, often those from communities of color, LGBT communities, and other marginalized groups, we strive to reduce isolation, inequality, and stigma. We believe a healthy community is one where everyone has a stable place to live, access to health care and support, and economic security.

About This Cause

Through housing, health care, and education programs, SDA serves over 1,000 seniors and people with disabilities each year, mainly in the Tenderloin, Bayview, Mission, SOMA and Western Addition. Our programs include direct service, education and advocacy. Consumer Rights for Community Living works with seniors and people with disabilities one-on-one to get the services they need and to stay in their own homes, rather than nursing homes. Senior & Disability University and Survival School offer classes in many languages and neighborhoods to educate seniors and people with disabilities on community resources and to empower people to take action. SDA’s Health Care Action Team advocates for expansion of long-term services and supports, and improvements to hospital discharge planning, using theater, song, storytelling and other tools. Our Housing Collaborative responds to San Francisco’s crisis of rising rents and widespread displacement of seniors and people with disabilities by working to prevent evictions and preserve and expand affordable housing. SDA offers free computer classes in an accessible computer lab to seniors and people with disabilities, to prevent isolation and build community. SDA is one of the only organizations in the country that addresses issues facing both seniors and people with disabilities. We are proud to be building a different kind of organization, one that mirrors the diversity of our community in terms of age, disability, language and economic status. Our participants reflect the city’s racial diversity, and many of our members are LGBT; most rely on benefit programs and subsidized housing. Over half of our staff are over 55 or disabled, more than half are people of color, and we have staff who speak Spanish, Korean, Russian and English.
