Mission Statement

QCC promotes social justice and the artistic and financial evolution of Queer art and culture. QCC’s multidisciplinary presentations, commissions, art services, website, and interpretive programs build community through the arts: they nurture the creativity of our community’s outstanding artists, promote the development of culturally diverse LGBTQ+ arts organizations, and broaden and deepen our community’s participation in the San Francisco Bay Area’s cultural life.

About This Cause

Founded in 1993 by a multi-racial group of LGBTQ+ Civil Rights activists and artists, QCC is an LGBTQ+ arts services and presenting organization committed to nurturing an LGBTQ+ community that centers the needs of its most vulnerable members. Our signature program is the National Queer Arts Festival held in conjunction with June LGBTQ+ Pride. Since 1998, QCC has curated and produced 23 National Queer Arts Festivals (NQAF) that have featured more than 2,300 LGBTQ+ artists in over 920 different arts and cultural events. A program of the Festival, Creating Queer Community (CQC), has commissioned over 400 LGBTQ+ artists to create, produce, finance, promote, and document original works examining LGBTQ+ social justice and civil rights issues. In 2016, QCC began to expand the NQAF into Oakland where we presented 6 original productions and exhibitions and conducted 20 hours of capacity-building artistic planning and grant writing workshops for individual artists. Expanding our Festival’s presence into the East Bay was essential to serve our core constituency of LGBTQ+ people of color, who have been deeply impacted by gentrification and displacement out of San Francisco and into the East Bay. QCC began supporting Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer arts organizations of color to access foundation and government funding programs in 2001, successfully raising $7,500,000+ in the years since. Our programs reflect 4 core values: social justice, cultural equity, representation, and artistic excellence, leading to one of the SF Bay Area’s most diverse audiences. LGBTQ+ people of color have always comprised our Board majority and artistic leadership. The programs and artists we present reflect our community’s racial, sexual, gender, economic, ability, body size, and age diversity. QCC serves unmet artistic support, resource, and fundraising needs of the SF Bay area’s LGBTQ+ communities.
