Mission Statement

Caldera is a catalyst for transformation through innovative art and environmental programs. We provide year-round, long-term arts and nature mentoring to underserved youth in Portland and rural Oregon.

About This Cause

Caldera’s youth program provides underserved Oregon children with year-round, long-term mentoring through arts and nature projects, beginning at age eleven and continuing through young adulthood. Caldera’s programs currently take place in partner schools in Portland and in the Bend, Redmond, Warm Springs, Madras, and Sisters areas. Teachers at these schools help us identify students with limited access to resources whom could benefit from our programming. Once we start working with a student, we commit to working with them every week, through high school graduation and beyond. During the summer, Caldera hosts a summer camp bringing youth together from both sides of the mountain to our Arts Center on Blue Lake. The Arts Center is on ninety acres of mountain and forest land at the edge of what's often called "the Crater Lake of the Central Oregon Cascades", just west of Sisters, Oregon. During the winter, Caldera’s adult program offers month-long residencies to professional artists: the gift of time & creative work space at our Arts Center. Artists are provided private A-frame cabins and share access to wet and dry studios, a darkroom, a kiln, editing facilities and rehearsal and performance space. Because we believe a range of backgrounds enhances the communal experience, residencies are open to artists from any field, as well as scientists, engineers and environmentalists. Linking Caldera’s youth and adult programs is a passionate belief in the power of creativity.
