Mission Statement

The San Francisco 49ers Academy provides adolescent students with a community of support that empowers them to be engaged in school, to reach their full potential, and achieve academic and personal success in middle school, high and beyond.

About This Cause

The San Francisco 49ers Academy (49ers Academy), a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is integrated into the public school system to provide students (grades 6-12) with a comprehensive community of support that connects kids to caring adults and resources designed to help them succeed. The 49ers Academy is dedicated to empowering under-resourced students in the low-income community of East Palo alto with opportunities and resources to change the trajectory of their lives. For 25 years, the 49ers Academy’s approach has fostered deep connections between students, families, teachers, and local community agencies to ensure the fundamental needs of the whole child and their families are met. Providing individualized wraparound support and case management through mentorship, family empowerment, academic success, enrichment opportunities, community engagement, and social-emotional learning. In partnership with Ravenswood (RCSD) and Sequoia (SUHSD) school districts, the 49ers Academy is embedded in the school day and provides wraparound support through: School-wide strategies - Advocating for students and families by working with schools and school district leaders to implement solutions that create an equitable school community and support students’ comprehensive needs. Targeted, needs-based services- Identifying students experiencing hardship outside of the classroom or falling behind in school and deploying services accordingly. Intensive individualized support- Assigning caseworkers to students and families with the most need and highest risk. Caseworkers coordinate efforts with school administrators, track students’ academic progress, and connect families to community service agencies, as necessary. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)- Creating a trusted space for students to have a solid foundation to increase their academic self-efficacy, positive identity, and social skills. In sharp contrast with their peers in nearby wealthier communities, where annual incomes are seven times higher than residents of East Palo Alto, students have the fewest opportunities and resources while being the most likely to experience trauma, food insecurities, homelessness, and social injustice. Historically, East Palo Alto students have the greatest need in San Mateo County: Nearly 90% are low-income, 55% are housing insecure, 56% are English-language learners, less than 20% meet grade-level standards in language arts and math, and only 40% graduate high school; 100% of students are low-income children of color: 78% of students are Hispanic, 12% are Pacific Islander, and 8% are African American. The 49ers Academy aims to disrupt these inequities and put alumni on the path to long-term success and upward mobility, leveling the playing field for generations to come. The 49ers Academy sees an opportunity to further its mission and an opportunity to address a critical need for its alumni.
