Mission Statement

ABADÁ-Capoeira San Francisco’s (ACSF) was founded in 1991 by master artist Márcia Treidler to preserve, develop, and share the art of Capoeira with integrity. By exploring creative ways of sharing Capoeira and related arts, ACSF remains a pioneering force in the preservation and development of Brazilian arts.

About This Cause

Women-led and rooted in San Francisco’s Mission District for 31 years, ACSF remains focused on using Capoeira arts to transcend socio-economic barriers and as a catalyst for building a healthy, just, and vibrant society in which people feel connected to and responsible for their community. Capoeira, ACSF’s primary discipline, is an Afro-Brazilian martial art created by enslaved Africans in Brazil in response to oppression and used to fight for freedom. Combining self-defense, dance, ritual, acrobatics, and music, Capoeira is a dialogue of body, mind, and spirit. It is internationally practiced, and protected under UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Grounded in values of inclusion, respect, diversity, community, and opposition to discrimination of any form, ACSF’s work uses Capoeira as a vehicle to enrich disadvantaged communities, and to promote cultural, social, and racial equity. ACSF is committed to artistic excellence, and to providing accessible, inclusive, culturally authentic programs and apprenticeships led by highly-skilled artists. Programs include daily free and affordable classes for children, teens and adults in Capoeira, dance, music, and mobility and fitness. ACSF’s Capoeira Arts Center enlivens the Mission neighborhood fostering improved health and cultural connectedness through participation in arts. The performance company shares Brazilian culture through outdoor festivals; community-based appearances; and ticketed productions featuring guest artists. School programs provide arts education to youth-in-need. The apprenticeship project places emerging artists as assistant instructors and performers, preparing them for employment with ACSF. ACSF shares its name and philosophy with ABADÁ-Capoeira, founded in 1988 by Mestre Camisa — Márcia’s teacher and mentor — in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to conserve the history and heritage of Capoeira while allowing it to develop and adapt to current times. ABADÁ-Capoeira, translated into English, stands for Brazilian Association for the Support and Development of the Art of Capoeira, and it has independent branches across 80 countries. From grassroot beginnings, ACSF has become a cornerstone for art and culture and a model organization for Capoeira communities worldwide. In 2006, ACSF was declared by Brazil’s Minister of Culture as a “point of culture” recognizing it as an international hub for Afro-Brazilian culture.
