Mission Statement
In 1998, a group of six parents had the dream of creating a school that would be a gateway to college for all students regardless of race, income, or learning style. They founded Gateway High School, a college preparatory, public charter school in San Francisco. Since then, more than 96% of our graduates have gone on to colleges across the country and the world (double the statewide rate). In 2011, we expanded our model with the addition of a middle school. At Gateway Public Schools, we believe that all students can learn at high levels and that all students learn differently. We combine a rigorous academic program with a nurturing environment where the individual talents, strengths, and needs of our learners are identified and supported.
About This Cause
Gateway combines a rigorous academic program with an approach where the individial talents and strengths of its students are identified and supported. Gateway seeks and supports students who have ambition, who are committed to working hard, and who are eager to share responsibility for their own learning. Working with teachers committed to our mission, Gateway students will acquire the skills, habits, and knowledge necessart for academic and personal success in college and in adult life. We serve a student body that reflects the diversity of San Francisco: More than 75% are students of color More than 40% are first-generation college-bound More than 25% have a diagnosed learning disability 45% fall below the poverty line In addition to providing high quality public education to our students, we seek to accomplish two other fundamental goals: 1) By ensuring that each of our students has post-secondary opportunities, we hope to help change the demographics of the college-bound population in San Francisco. 2) By serving as a model public school, we hope to demonstrate that public education can and does work for diverse learners, share our best practices, and serve as a catalyst for change within the public sphere.
