Mission Statement

San Francisco Art & Film for Teenagers was established in 1993 to make the arts a constant and inspiring presence in young people's lives. It's motto is “we give you what school can’t” and it delivers by make available first-rate cultural events to students—events chosen to stimulate students curiosity, excite their imaginations, and help them enter a wider world. Experiences that address the aspiring, self-reflective parts of young people’s natures are sorely needed in the present educational climate. SF Art & Film believes a steady stream of contact with all the arts gives them a context through which they can begin to understand their own lives and discover their own creative energies.

About This Cause

On Fridays throughout the school year we offer our students free screenings of classic, foreign and art films through our Cine/Club program. Each screening kicks off with a classic cartoon and a short film, followed by an introduction from one of our guest speakers and then the feature film. We finish with a group discussion facilitated by founding director Ronald Chase. Twice a month on Saturdays we meet up at a rotating series of art galleries and museums including SFMOMA, the De Young, the Minnesota Street Project, the Exploratorium. Depending on the week, students might see major shows by the biggest names in art or discover brand new work that’s just being developed. Art Saturday offers a perfect way for students, especially those from outside San Francisco, to become more familiar and relaxed about moving around the city. It is also an opportunity for students from different schools to meet and make friendships through shared interest in art. Nearly every week SF Art & Film is able to offer free seats to a variety of cultural events though our Free Tickets program. All middle school, high school and college students are eligible. These seats are donated by the cultural institutions, including the SF Symphony, SF Opera, ACT, Cutting Ball Theater and others, many of which have worked with us since our inception in 1993. Finally, our Film Workshop is offered annually is open to all Bay Area students, from late middle school through college. Each year, new students are introduced to the fundamentals of professional filmmaking while returning students refine and deepen their skills. Our workshop acts as producer, helping students to build a portfolio of work that will help them get into film schools and develop a foundation of skills – looking, seeing, thinking, doing - that will serve them throughout their careers.
