Mission Statement
Purple Silk Music Education Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in Oakland California, founded to support music education for inner-city youth. Our programs include the Great Wall Youth Orchestra & Chorus. Our mission is to instill in young people an appreciation of music from all cultures through instruction in traditional Chinese instruments.
About This Cause
We welcome all children who wish to study Chinese and World music on a traditional Chinese music instruments. Affordable classes for beginner, intermediate and advanced are taught every Saturday at Laney College. We also work in the public schools during week days, teaching Chinese instrumental music to students in elementary, middle and high schools. Our students come from diverse ethnic backgrounds and many are from lower social-economical families. Students are exposed to opportunities to perform in world-class theaters and events around the Bay Area and across the United States. Outside the Bay Area, our children have performed in Hawaii, New York, Los Angeles, and we are looking to bring students to experience more parts of the world through music.
