FIRST PLACE FOR YOUTH

Oakland, California, 94612 United States

Mission Statement

The mission of First Place is to help foster youth build the skills they need to make a successful transition to self-sufficiency and responsible adulthood. Our vision is that involvement in the foster care system does not limit the opportunity to thrive in adulthood.

About This Cause

We Support Foster Youth as They Learn to Support Themselves We offer foster youth, ages 16-25, programs they need today while influencing the laws, ideas, and policies that will impact future generations for years to come. At First Place, our nationally recognized program model helps foster youth beat the odds. We support young people with a safe place to live, and then help them find their first job, and stay in school. Our programs and advocacy for systems change provide thousands of the most vulnerable young people the tools they need to reach their full potential in school, work, and life. First Place serves foster youth who have, on average, lived in six or more foster placements in eight or more years of foster care. Our first step is to provide housing in scattered-site apartments then to offer wrap-around supports that help youth define individualized pathways to success. Our committed staff work one on one with each young adult, offering employment and education coaching, counseling and life skills supports. Through a combined effort of programming, policy work, rigorous evaluation, and smart partnerships, First Place for Youth is building a movement to offer a national swell of effective support for young adults exiting foster care.
