Mission Statement

GAIA strengthens healthcare in under-resourced African communities. Our vision is a world where health outcomes are not determined by who you are or where you live. Through our local community partners, we deliver a variety of life-saving services to people in need, with a particular emphasis on Malawi’s most vulnerable citizens: women and children, providing access to healthcare at the far end of the road.

About This Cause

GAIA was co-founded in 2000 by The Rev. Dr. William Rankin and Dr. Charlie Wilson, world renowned UCSF neurosurgeon in response to the global HIV/AIDS epidemic. Since 2001 GAIA has been working in impoverished Malawian villages to provide basic health services, targeting prevention, care, and support in communities affected by HIV, AIDS, TB and malaria. Our dedicated US and Malawi staff is led by Executive Director, Todd Schafer, with over 20 years’ experience in the nonprofit sector, including six years living and working in Africa. With community development, health care, and relief work expertise, GAIA staff carefully monitors and evaluates all programs. GAIA has a strong reputation for integrity and collaboration with local community, government, and religious and institutional leaders. In the US, GAIA is a secular 501(c)3 non-profit organization based in Oakland, California. Tax ID# 94-3364364. In Malawi, GAIA is registered as an international non-governmental organization, providing official sanction to our work.
