Stern Grove Festival's mission is to make live musical experiences accessible to all by presenting free, high-quality concerts in a beautiful outdoor setting. The festival is committed to fostering a love for the arts, building community through shared cultural experiences, and preserving the historic Sigmund Stern Grove as a space for public enjoyment and artistic expression. At its core, Stern Grove Festival is more than just a concert series—it’s a civic tradition without barriers that brings people together across generations.
About This Cause
Founded in 1938, Stern Grove Festival is the longest-running free outdoor music festival in the country. In honor of her late husband, Sigmund Stern, Rosalie M. Stern donated the land to San Francisco to create a space where live music would be accessible to all. With this vision, she established Stern Grove Festival, ensuring that generations of San Franciscans could experience world-class performances in a natural, communal setting. The inaugural season featured the San Francisco Symphony, a tradition that continues today, reinforcing the Festival’s role as a cornerstone of the city’s cultural landscape. Over the past 88 years, Stern Grove Festival has evolved from a classical music series into a multi-genre celebration of music and community. Today, it presents ten consecutive weekends of diverse live performances each summer, welcoming over 110,000 attendees annually. Beyond the stage, the Festival enriches the audience experience through programs like the KidZone, which offers arts and crafts, live performances, and instrument education for young attendees. Despite its growth, Stern Grove Festival remains true to its founding mission—keeping live music free and accessible to all. As one of the few large-scale festivals in the country that is entirely free, it continues to be a civic tradition that unites audiences across generations, fostering a shared love of music and culture in the heart of the city.
