The California Youth Symphony provides music education and performance opportunities for young people of all backgrounds.
About This Cause
The mission of the California Youth Symphony (CYS) is to provide talented young musicians with the finest musical experience and the opportunity for personal growth through the rehearsal and performance of symphonic music, while also providing the community with excellent yet affordable concerts of classical music. Founded in 1952, the organization has grown to comprise 8 musical ensembles, from beginning programs for winds and strings to 2 full symphony orchestras. Current enrollment exceeds 500. CYS presents 20 concerts per year, on average, ranging from full symphony concerts at such venues as the Flint Center and Davies Symphony Hall, to community service concerts at local senior centers. CYS has also established a tradition of international touring. We were the first youth orchestra ever to tour overseas when, in 1963, we visited Japan on an historic 16 concert trip. Since then we have mounted 19 additional international tours.
