Mission Statement

The “SS Red Oak Victory”, the most unique of the four surviving World War II Victory ships left in the world, is a powerful symbol for the history-making achievements
of not only the City of Richmond and the Richmond Shipyard workers, but also of the country as a whole. Richmond was not only the town that helped win the Great War, but it was also the place where the American future was invented. From modern manufacturing methods, the modern healthcare system, progressive management practices and race relations, to the progress achieved by women at home and in the workplace, the Kaiser Permanente Shipyards made powerful contributions to the creation of a future that we today take for granted.

About This Cause

The Richmond Museum Association mission is the preservation and restoration of the Red Oak Victory
as an operational vessel. As an operational museum, the Red Oak Victory will provide a unique perspective on the history-making achievements
of the City of Richmond and the Richmond Shipyards, where America's progressive future was invented through modern manufacturing and management methods, modern healthcare, and progressive race relations and the women's movement. The ship itself also had an honorable history, having served in three wars (WW II, Korea, and Vietnam), before joining the mothball fleet in 1968. Returned to Richmond as a museum ship in 1998, we are now actively raising funds to restore this important symbol of national and regional achievement and pride back to operational status. Image the day when the SS Red Oak Victory will again steam the waters of San Francisco Bay! In the meantime, as a community resource, the vessel has been a site for local events and services, and an awe-inspiring destination for curious families seeking to understand our local and national history. The SS Red Oak Victory also continues to recognize and honor those who served in the armed forces, the merchant marine, and in home-front facilities such as the Kaiser Richmond Shipyards through reenactments, displays of military vehicles and history, and as a favorite destination for old and young Rosies of the San Francisco Bay Area. With your support and help, the Red Oak Victory will become a powerful symbol of America’s and Richmond’s past and future that it will preserve for many generations. Your contribution will provide much needed preservation to a unique historical ship and as a visible symbol of American resolve.
