About This Cause
Based in the heart of Silicon Valley, just on the border of Palo Alto and Mountain View, Golden State Youth Orchestra (formerly El Camino Youth Symphony) was founded in 1963 by William Galbraith, a young violinist and conductor who envisioned a youth orchestra that would give students the opportunity to learn and perform challenging professional-level repertoire. 56 years later, GSYO continues to provide first-rate music education and training for our young musicians who, in turn, present outstanding music events for the community. Annually, GSYO educates more than 460 K-12 students, many of whom are on scholarship, who travel from as far as Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Ramon, and Pacifica to train and perform in one or more our ensembles. With four orchestras and two instrumental ensembles, our tiered program accommodates all levels of students, whether novice, intermediate, or experienced. Our young musicians are mentored by a distinguished roster of professional conductors and coaches. An ongoing program of concert and ticket outreach ensures that our concerts are open to a broad community of underserved youth, families and seniors. On average, we reach at least 14,000 community members per year, both new and longtime supporters, with our performances. Weekly rehearsals, quarterly sectionals, retreats, summer workshops and camps form a vital part of the GSYO experience, creating opportunities for youth at all levels of musical training to develop socially and artistically while participating in the Bay Area's foremost instrumental training and education program. In addition, all of our ensembles participate in various outreach and educational programs designed to bring music to the community.
