Mission Statement

Freedom from Hunger brings innovative and sustainable self-help solutions to the fight against chronic hunger and poverty. Together with local partners, we equip families with resources they need to build futures of health, hope and dignity.

About This Cause

Founded in 1946, Freedom from Hunger’s vision is a world free from chronic hunger—the “hidden hunger” that debilitates nearly one billion people, or about one-seventh of humanity. Freedom from Hunger believes sustainable solutions to hunger must build on the resilience and resourcefulness of the chronically hungry poor and their indispensable traditions of mutual aid, solidarity and social capital. Since 1989, we have worked with the financial services sector, specifically microfinance institutions (MFI’s) and non-profits that make small loans to or promote savings for very poor women. We design and promote vital life-skills training (financial literacy, business and entrepreneurship skills) as well as access to health-related education, products and services. This powerful combination empowers poor women and youth with resources and information so that they can increase and manage their assets and protect the health of their families. Together, the combination of resources and skills help them escape the chains of hunger and break the cycle of poverty. Freedom from Hunger is currently reaching more that 5.7 million individuals in 23 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America with programs proven to improve their family’s food security, health and financial stability. Through access to small loans, savings, business training and health education, products and services, Freedom from Hunger empowers families to achieve an end to chronic hunger and poverty.
