Mission Statement

To enrich lives through a continuum of education and wellness services.

About This Cause

NHA is one of the largest multi-purpose human services organizations in San Diego County, employing over 800 fulltime employees and serving thousands of residents (children, families, seniors, and youth) each year. The agency has 28 key program areas offered at 125 locations throughout San Diego County. NHA provides assistance in the area of community development, on-the-job training, education and social services. For over 100 years the Neighborhood House Association (NHA) has been afforded the opportunity to help thousands of families in need throughout San Diego County. We have achieved this through our mission of enriching lives through a continuum of education and wellness services. In addition, NHA has a vision of leading the way in developing healthy and educated communities—where dreams become reality. Our goal is to continue this mission and vision for the next 100 years. The NHA Continuum of Care system is designed to guide our clients through a comprehensive array of programs and services one individual, one household, and one community at a time. This is accomplished by effectively referring and delivering best practice services based on education, wellness and empowerment, with the goal of our future leaders, productive and skilled, enter the workforce 20 years from now. The continuum begins with our Services to Pregnant Women and Black Infant Health programs which offer comprehensive services including weekly prenatal classes for pregnant women and their families, as well as individualized postpartum home visits. Once the child is between 6 weeks to 4 years, he or she enters our Early Head Start and Head Start programs. The child receives an individualized educational program to make sure they are “Kinder-ready” when they leave the program. Our new vision is to open a Charter School within the next two to three years, beginning with Transitional-Kindergarten through 3rd grade. The Charter School will complete the Continuum of Care model, and using our existing best practices, provide better outcomes for children and their families. The next phase is the Homework Center, which provides students grades 3 through 12 with a quiet, safe place to study when their alternatives are limited. Complementing our Homework Center is our College Academy program which assists underprivileged high school students in reaching their goals of attending college. During the summer we operate a Summer Intern program that prepares 30 high school and college students for future endeavors and the workforce. NHA is investing approximately $75,000 on each child today, with the goal of the students returning to our Workforce Placement here at Neighborhood House Association 20 years from now. Subsequently, upon reaching the age of retirement, we have medical and/or social services through our Senior Service programs.
