Mission Statement
The Armed Services YMCA began during the Civil War period of our nation’s history when volunteers from the YMCA began offering supportive services to soldiers. In 1920, the Armed Services YMCA San Diego was established with the mission of enhancing the lives of junior enlisted service members and their families and is the oldest and largest non-profit organization in San Diego solely devoted to that cause. We strive to make military life easier for junior enlisted service members and their families through a wide-range of local programs and support services uniquely suited to their special needs.
About This Cause
We provide a variety of programs, services, and events designed to support junior enlisted active duty service members and their families. In 1982 we began supporting wounded, injured and ill service members via a memorandum of understanding with the Department of Defense at our site at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. Our support services include providing the hospital’s volunteer management program, connecting patients to therapeutic programs designed to enhance their rehabilitation and recovery as well as offering emergency financial assistance in the form of grocery cards, gas and cash cards for essential needs, transportation vouchers, respite childcare assistance, clothing and toiletries to meet other urgent needs. Our Murphy Canyon location offers programs and events designed to support active duty junior enlisted service members, children in military families (many of whom are at-risk) and spouses/partners of active duty service members with an array of supportive services targeted specifically for them. Our team of licensed clinical therapists and clinical social workers provide 100% confidential In-Home Clinical Counseling, meeting with clients where they are most comfortable – either at their own home, our offices, Naval Medical Center San Diego or other public location. We are the only branch of the Armed Services YMCA nation-wide to offer this specialized service tailored to support junior enlisted active duty service members and their families.
