Mission Statement
The Guidance Center provides comprehensive mental health treatment to our community's most disadvantaged children and their families struggling with mental illness and abuse, leading them toward a positive and productive future. The Guidance Center envisions a community where all children have the help they need to be healthy and happy.
About This Cause
Founded in 1946, The Guidance Center has been breaking barriers to mental health care for nearly 80 years. The Guidance Center offers a wide range of programs at its three locations: our headquarters in Long Beach and our two smaller clinics in Compton and San Pedro. Across our three clinics, we provide comprehensive services in the clinic, in the field, and in nearly 50 schools within the Long Beach, Lynwood, Paramount, and Los Angeles Unified School Districts. Our services include, but are not limited to, clinic and field-based therapy; school-based therapy; intensive mental health services; psychological testing; ages 0-5 specialized treatment; trauma-informed community-based prevention and early intervention; advanced training in assessing and managing self-harm and suicide risk in clients; and internship programs for mental health professionals. In 2024, we provided vital core mental health services to more than 2,800 children and their families, providing 67,884 treatment sessions across all three of our clinics, in schools, and in the community. At The Guidance Center, we don’t see ourselves as a service provider to the community. We see ourselves as neighbors. We are much more effective in bringing hope and healing to the families who need us when we are an integrated part of the neighborhoods and communities where they live. Furthermore, we collaborate with sister organizations, civic leaders, and community members so we can be joined in our efforts and our mission to help the families who need us most. The Guidance Center places community connectedness and collaboration at the forefront. We have active, long-standing partnerships with the City of Long Beach, Long Beach Police Department, Long Beach Unified School District, Los Angeles Department of Mental Health, Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital, and many others. In addition, we provide compassionate, evidence-based mental health services across various channels such as in schools, homes, clinics, and via telehealth, when appropriate, to meet our clients where they are at. Through our commitment to children’s mental health, we continually seek to extend our reach, deepen existing collaborations, explore new partnership opportunities, conduct outreach within the community, and enhance our mental health and wellness services to best serve those in need.
