Mission Statement
Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services provides compassionate mental health, substance use, and suicide prevention services to individuals and families, especially in communities where discrimination and injustice limit access.
About This Cause
Didi Hirsch Mental Health Services was founded in 1942 as Los Angeles’s first nonprofit community mental health clinic by volunteers who saw an urgent need for psychiatric care among people living in poverty. What began as a volunteer-run agency with a single site is now a federally designated Community Mental Health Center whose 650 staff and 350 volunteers help approximately 228,000 children, families and adults each year at 9 sites and in partnership with 78 schools in Los Angeles and Orange counties. We serve people across the lifecycle, from young children to seniors and offer a wide range of culturally competent services to meet the diverse needs of people seeking help. These services are broadly summarized as follows. • Mental Health—including outpatient services, school-based programs and Crisis Residential Treatment. We provide evidence-based therapy for children, transition aged youth and adults. Our short-term residential centers serve adults in crisis, many of whom are homeless. • Substance Use Services—offering prevention and treatment services, as well as our Via Avanta residential treatment center for women. • Suicide Prevention Center—providing a comprehensive array of crisis services. In addition to 24/7 multilingual crisis call/chat/text lines, this also includes counseling for survivors of suicide attempts and those who have lost loved ones to suicide. Didi Hirsch is also a crucial training ground for clinicians and community members in mental health, substance use and suicide prevention. We also collaborate with local law enforcement agencies on 911 diversion initiatives for individuals in crisis.
