Mission Statement
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego invites all audiences to experience our world, our region, and ourselves through the prism of contemporary art. We seek to harness the potency of contemporary art to inspire expansive thinking and an inclusive world. We envision empathetic, interconnected communities drawn together through the art of our time. We believe that art is essential to our well-being; artists are visionary thinkers and innovators; contemporary art illuminates the issues of our time; and the preservation and care of art is critical for the future.
About This Cause
The forerunner of The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) was established in 1941 as the La Jolla Art Center. It has evolved into a renowned contemporary art museum and the leading contemporary arts institution in San Diego. The high-quality collection numbers over 5,600 artworks, created since 1950, and is known for works by emerging artists and under-recognized, mid-career artists, as well as by major international figures. Since the early 1990s the Museum has had an explicit bi-national mandate and welcomes cross-border populations. This includes a focus on artists from both sides of the US/Mexico border, celebrating both San Diego and Tijuana's artistic communities.
