Mission Statement
At SHNS, students can expect a high-quality, low-cost private Catholic education—in an academically challenging and highly structured environment. We serve at-risk youth in the 6th through 8th grades, 98% of whom are Latino and in danger of dropping out of school and risking a lifetime of poor outcomes. Sacred Heart Nativity School for Boys was established in 2001 and Our Lady of Grace Nativity School for Girls joined the family in 2006. The students enjoy the "best of both worlds" of single gender and co-educational classes, as both are offered. Our students benefit from a rich and integrated environment where they learn not only reading, math and science but also the importance of hard work, ethical leadership, compassion for others and responsible citizenship. SHNS depends on your partnership to maintain this nurturing environment and enable us to live our mission of breaking the cycle of poverty through education.
About This Cause
Sacred Heart Nativity School for Boys, founded in 2001, and Our Lady of Grace Nativity School for Girls, founded in 2006, (6th through 8th grades) provide a rigorous enriched private school education and individualized support within the framework of the Jesuit mission and tradition. The Sacred Heart Nativity School curriculum builds on the Nativity School/Miguel model founded by the New York Province Jesuits in 1948. Mission Standards include a holistic faith based education that serves the economically poor and marginalized, with an extended school day and year, partners with the family, and includes a commitment beyond graduation within an effective administrative structure. 98% of our families are Latino and all must qualify for the Federal Free or Reduced Meal Program. Our school’s primary goal is to perform an academic intervention for our students so that by the time they graduate as eighth graders, they are able to compete for openings in college prep high schools and are committed to succeeding in and graduating from high school in four years. Our over-arching goal is for these students to become the first in their families to attend and graduate from college. Our schools are distinguished by: 8 hour school day, beginning at 8:00 am and leaving at 5 pm One Saturday school days per month Small classes with an average 8:1 student to teacher ratio Four weeks of summer school at Bellarmine College Preparatory San José Two weeks of summer camp Our Graduate Support Program through high school and college
