Mission Statement
The San Diego Air & Space Museum, one of the world’s premier air and space themed science centers and museums, inspires and encourages our next generations to achieve excellence in their lives. The Museum challenges their innate human pioneering spirit and encourages the necessary risk-taking required to achieve global innovation success. The mission of the San Diego Air & Space Museum is to preserve, inspire, educate and celebrate: Preserve significant artifacts of air and space history and technology. Inspire excellence in science, technology, engineering and math. Educate the public about the historical and social significance of air and space technology and its future promise as a pathway to advanced innovations. Celebrate aviation and space flight history and technology.
About This Cause
The San Diego Air & Space Museum (SDASM) has preserved the world’s aviation and space heritage for 55 years now. It’s been accredited since 1986 by the American Alliance of Museums, and the twelfth institution in California (second in San Diego) to be awarded Smithsonian Affiliate status. SDASM is the official Air & Space Museum and Education Center for California (designated in 2007 by the California State Legislature). SDASM is the fifth largest aviation museum in the U.S., now housing the largest private nonprofit aerospace library and archives in the country. SDASM had 277,000 visitors last year from all age groups, families, school groups. Special traveling exhibits included “Da Vinci: The Ultimate Innovator”. Currently, our special exhibit is “Be the Astronaut” which transformed our exhibit hall into a futuristic space adventure. “Be the Astronaut” is a fun, interactive adventure where visitors are in control as they launch a rocket, pilot a spaceship, and drive a rover in space. Virtual astronauts help visitors discover the solar system first hand, land on multiple worlds, including the moon, Mars, Jupiter and asteroids. Designed with the help of NASA experts, “Be the Astronaut” is fun for the whole family and takes science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) learning into outer space. SDASM educates diverse audiences of all ages and backgrounds by innovative collection and special subject area connections introduced to inspire and provide better understanding, focusing on STEM education. Programs/services include hands-on interactive workshops, outreach programs, traveling exhibits, School-in-the-Park classes, after-school programs and summer camps. Focus is placed on school partnerships, especially those with underserved/at-risk students. Last year 25,695 area students were directly impacted. SDASM Youth Education Programs (including STEM) reached preschoolers, K-12 students, and teachers with 25,695 participating in field trips, outreach programs and in-Museum classes. SDASM has a FLY YOUR RIDE Engineering Competition (the only one of its kind) for middle and high school students. Teams design and compete - testing their flying cars at the Museum. Winners in various categories are awarded scholarships. New programs and exhibits are continually developed, promoting and inspiring upcoming generations to achieve excellence in their lives. The primary programs and services of the Museum are: COLLECTIONS: Collections are the core of the San Diego Air & Space Museum’s (SDASM) mission and educational activities. SDASM manages and preserves over 120 aircraft, over 2 million artifacts/artwork, and tens of millions of archival materials. SDASM’s expanding Library & Archives (L&A) collection of aerospace-related material is now the nation’s 2nd largest. SDASM also maintains a robust restoration department, consisting of volunteers with the requisite skill sets to build and restore a range of aircraft, from gliders to space vehicles. SDASM adheres to American Alliance of Museums standards and maintains extensive internal policies and procedures for best practices and collection care. EXHIBITIONS: The collections are used in exhibitions, disseminating educational, historical, technical and biographical information. Open 363 days a year, SDASM showcases history and societal contributions from development and advancement of air and space technology. SDASM ensures information is objective, accurate and educational. Exhibits are selected based on merit, opportunities for interpretation and compatibility with the mission statement. In addition to permanent exhibits, SDASM hosts travelling exhibits to attract a diverse audience. Over 277,000 visited last year. This year that number is expected to increase with the introduction of “Be the Astronaut.” EDUCATION: SDASM educates diverse audiences of all ages and backgrounds by innovative collection and special subject area connections introduced to inspire and provide better understanding, focusing on STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) education. Programs/services include hands-on interactive workshops, outreach programs, traveling exhibits, School-in-the-Park classes, after-school programs and summer camps. Focus is placed on school partnerships, especially those with underserved/at-risk students. Last year 25,695 area students were directly impacted. This year, SDASM is working to exceed that number by 10%. RESEARCH: SDASM actively encourages use of its L&A to enhance the public’s education in aviation, space history and technology. The L&A also supports the curatorial, education and restoration staffs, as well as its corps of volunteers. Open to the general public 5 days a week, SDASM provides services for authors, researchers, educators, students and other museums and libraries, worldwide. Over 11,500 research requests were answered last fiscal year, a 35% increase from the prior year. SDASM presents the International Air & Space Hall of Fame each year in its Pavilion of Flight. The Hall of Fame honors the accomplishments of famed air and space pioneers – the innovators, scientists, aviators, engineers and explorers who positively influenced the technologies we now take for granted.
