About This Cause
For over 55 years, Up with People (WUP) has been an apolitical, non-sectarian international educational organization dedicated to bringing people together from different mindsets, cultures, ethnicities, and beliefs to find and build upon that which connects us – rather than separates us. Up with People was founded by J. Blanton Belk in 1965 to respond to the turbulence, social and civil unrest of the 1960s positively. Its purpose was to give young people a community to seek harmony and understanding rather than disorder and discord. This concept was so unique and constructive that its earliest supporters who worked with Mr. Belk included the likes of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, Olympian Jesse Owens, and DeWitt Wallace, founder of Reader’s Digest. “The phrase Up with People became a song, a conviction, and the name of an organization that would become a worldwide force bringing people together for the common good despite ideological, political, ethnic and religious differences.” We offer an education program that empowers youth to become lifelong changemakers through arts-based experiential learning programs. We bring youth from around the world together to connect, collaborate, and create as a community while they learn skills necessary to spark change in their hometowns. These young leaders learn from each other and from the unique experiences we create. Through educational workshops, volunteer opportunities, and artistic projects, we help participants build the skills necessary to bring change and hope to their home communities.
