About This Cause

AltaMed, a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization, has provided health care and medical services to families in Southern California for more than 48 years, fulfilling its mission to increase access to comprehensive health and human services for multiethnic, medically underserved communities regardless of ability to pay. Founded in 1969 as the storefront “East Los Angeles Barrio Free Clinic”, AltaMed now serves over 209,000 individuals and families at 43 sites, which includes stand-alone health care clinics, mobile health care units, public housing development health sites, social service sites and an outpatient pediatric site affiliated with Children's Hospital LA. AltaMed’s health services include: primary health care, dental care, OB/GYN, pediatrics, cardiology, behavioral health, women’s health, substance abuse, geriatric medicine, adult day health centers for seniors, pharmacy, and HIV/AIDS treatment. AltaMed develops, supports, and administers social and human service programs to targeted populations of at-risk individuals within the community to provide skill enhancements, mentoring and employment for youth, and linkages and collaborations with other community service organizations. These programs include HIV/AIDS prevention services, health education and wellness promotion, substance abuse treatment and prevention, programs to support parenting and pregnant teens, and a variety of workforce development programs tailored to youth, including AmeriCorps, a health fellowship program, and the Escalera/STEM program. The goal of these social service programs is to serve, educate and empower the community by enhancing the health, educational achievement, economic improvement, personal well-being, and societal integration of community residents. AltaMed’s 48 year track record of providing health and human services to the community is marked by a deep commitment to the family. The organization believes that its logo, “the tree of life” accurately symbolizes this commitment and reflects its values of health, wellness, and community. As a recognized community leader in Greater East Los Angeles, AltaMed is an important safety net anchor for this mostly Latino community, effectively anticipating, and appropriately responding to the ever-changing needs of a medically-underserved population. Approximately 88% of AltaMed’s staff is Latino and 75% are bilingual. Approximately two-thirds of AltaMed’s clients are either uninsured or under-insured, and 69% live at-or-below the federal poverty level.
