Mission Statement
Disability Community Resource Center (DCRC) is a community-based, cross-disability, non-profit organization designed and operated by people with disabilities. DCRC is dedicated to connecting disabled individuals and older adults to resources, training, and advocacy tools; promoting disability pride; and building self-determined lives.
About This Cause
With the guidance of our professional trained staff, 70 percent of whom are people with disabilities themselves and 40 percent are bi-or multilingual, individuals set their own goals for achieving independent living and often achieving life changing outcomes. With DCRC’s services and support, individuals are kept from isolation of nursing homes, unemployment and homelessness. Independence allows them to not only thrive in their communities, but to give back and to assist others as well. The primary objective for the new fiscal year is for DCRC to assist 1200 individuals during the year, enabling them to secure and maintain their independence. Our approach includes the following services: • Independent Living Skills -money management, budgeting, transportation • Personal Assistance Services- registry of in-home care providers • Assistive Technology -training and acquisition of adaptive equipment • Information and Referral- disability information and technical assistance to 20,000 businesses and community members annually • Home Access-home modifications and equipment to increase home accessibility • Client Assistance Program --obtaining vocational equipment, financial guidance, support for educational endeavors, resources for tuition, books and supplies; • Employment placement in competitive positions in both small and large companies; • vocational training/classes, books and tuition; • Transition services and coordination of people back to their communities, after becoming newly disabled Approximately one in five individuals have disabilities, which includes people with mental health issues, physical disabilities and chronic illnesses. People with disabilities have much higher rates of unemployment than the general populace and are more likely to be low-income. 98% of the individuals DCRC serves meet the Federal poverty guidelines and have been proven to be at higher risk of institutionalization and homelessness. In fact, one of DCRC's most important services is helping people who are institutionalized transition back into their own homes in the community. In essence we are a full-service agency, with long standing roots in the western Los Angeles County community. We have a reputation for being perseverant and thorough in our efforts to assist our consumers. Many of them think of DCRC as part of their extended family and often come to us just to find a little comfort, which we are also happy to provide.
