About This Cause
Van Ness Recovery House (VNRH) is a residential drug and alcohol treatment facility targeting the LGBTQI community however nobody is turned away for treatment. Our treatment consists of 6 months of residential treatment which includes very intense work around the life of "whole person" looking at childhood trauma, self medicating to cover the pain of knowing you are different from others along with the need to keep hidden childhood trauma. While it may appear to someone on the outside looking in who sees "party drugs and alcohol" for most all we served there never really has been a party. There has been a good deal of survival and hoping to one day hear the words "we have worked with others with similar stories to yours" - you are "HOME" ! Once here residents are given their own bed, linens, dresser, closet space, hygiene products, and clothing if needed - this helps to establish trust and let the resident know that they no longer have to worry about basic needs. Next each resident is given a peer who is a bit further along in the program to help them navigate through the early days of treatment when everything can feel like a bit of a blur. After about a week most residents have found their stride and they are adapting to life sober - truly free of drugs and alcohol - for many it has been a long long time since this has been their reality. VNRH has had a long held belief that emotional honest is key to sobriety and gaining some sense of stability - the truth is alcoholics and addicts do not get loaded behind actions but rather the feelings that go with the actions. We spend countless hours in groups with the residents to help them reveal what is it that has been their block to true freedom through sobriety and recovery. Working mainly with LGBTQI people we understand the multiple layers and patterns of behavior which need to be addressed - patterns ties to dark, secret and anonymous behavior. Sobriety and recovery are very much tied to honesty as not being truthful and having secrets can lead to feelings which can be very difficult to remain sober through if not shared. Once the first three to four months have happened and the residents are starting to feel grounded and have started to build a foundation for their recovery they become eligible to enter the job training/job readiness program here on site at VNRH. The job training program is 100% tailored to support the residents in gaining employment that supports exactly where they are in their individual recovery. Maybe they need very very entry level with specific instructions on what to do day in and day out - stocking of the same section of a store.
