Mission Statement

Proyecto Pastoral at Dolores Mission empowers the community of Boyle Heights through grassroots projects in education, leadership, and service.

About This Cause

Purpose and History of the Organization Proyecto Pastoral is a 501(c)(3) non-profit (tax id# 95-3213958) that was founded in 1986 by Father Greg Boyle, S.J. and by the Dolores Mission community in response to pervasive poverty and gang violence, low educational attainment of children and youth, and limited economic and civic engagement opportunities for community members. In addition to serving as the lead agency for Promesa Boyle Heights, Proyecto Pastoral has two Early Childhood Education Centers, providing a high-quality, pre-K curriculum to 100 local children; IMPACTO, the four-site after school and summer academic enrichment program and Aliso Pico Recreation Center; the Guadalupe Homeless Project (GHP), an emergency shelter for men and other programs for families (primarily women and children); Comunidad en Movimiento (Community in Action), for broad-based community public safety and civic engagement; and a second-hand goods Distribution Center, managed by GHP. Region and Population Served Boyle Heights, on the eastern edge of Los Angeles, is one of its oldest communities. Its 6.5 square miles are isolated from greater Los Angeles by the LA River and several converging freeways. Boyle Heights is also one of Los Angeles’s most densely populated neighborhoods (95,000+), has one of the highest percentages of Latino residents (94%) and records 20 active gangs. As a gateway for immigrants for more than 100 years, it is a mix of generations-old immigrant families and new immigrants. More than half of Boyle Heights residents are foreign-born and for most Spanish is their primary language. Residents of Boyle Heights face numerous educational and economic challenges, placing the area in the top 10% of LA County’s 272 communities with high educational and income risk factors. Two-thirds of adult residents do not have a high school degree; 1 in 4 families live below the federal poverty line - double the county rate; and three-fourths of all housing units are renter occupied.
