Mission Statement
Project Understanding is structured to help people in need make it through tough times by assisting with Food, Housing and Tutoring. Empowering yourself to be self-sufficient can be achieved with support, resources, focus and dedication to hard work.
About This Cause
Homeless to Home works one on one with homeless neighbors to help them get housed and safe and to make positive changes in their lives. The Homeless to Home program takes us day by day into doctor’s offices, courts, government social services offices, and negotiating with landlords. Project Understanding collaborates with government and private partners, including Salvation Army, Turning Point Foundation, St. Vincent de Paul, and The City Center. We own and manage Tender Life Maternity Home, an oasis that provides homeless pregnant women with safe housing and supportive services that promote self-sufficiency. Women can find a safe place from the beginning of their pregnancy as well as receive training and guidance for up to 3 months after the birth of their baby. Tender Life’s program includes training in parenting, child development, and life skills where “courage meets compassion to build new lives.” We maintain Understanding House in Oxnard, where we collaborate with Ventura County Behavioral Health, the Veterans’ Administration and Oxnard Housing Authority to house our homeless neighbors. At the SHORE (Supportive Housing Opportunities in a Residential Environment) in downtown Ventura, we provide a Case Manager for 15 formerly homeless households, almost 50 people. Although the SHORE is permanent, supportive housing, as clients experience growing success, some of them choose to find their own housing. Project Understanding’s Food Pantry provides groceries once a month to families whose budget cannot support the purchase of their own. Donations may include non-perishables, fresh vegetables and fruits, or money designated for food. Most food on the shelves is purchased from FOOD Share. Clients are guided through an intake and referral process to identify resources to help them reach their goals. Project Understanding currently operates 11 Tutoring Centers in Ventura County — in El Rio, Oxnard, Santa Paula, Saticoy and Ventura. Teachers recommend students to Project’s Tutoring Program. Tutoring Centers provide extra instruction and a snack for students grades K-5 with volunteer tutors in one-to-one interaction.
