Mission Statement

House of Ruth’s mission is dedicated to preventing domestic violence and ensuring the safety and well-being of those impacted by it.

About This Cause

Recognized throughout Southern California for its effectiveness, House of Ruth has been providing comprehensive domestic violence services to the surrounding communities for over 43 years. During its most recently completed fiscal year, House of Ruth served over 15,000 survivors and community members through the following programs and activities: 24-HOUR CRISIS INTERVENTION HOTLINE: The 24-hour Hotline provides immediate crisis intervention, information, referrals, and other support for survivors and their children. Available in English and Spanish. RESIDENTIAL SHELTER: House of Ruth’s 55-bed emergency safe shelter provides up to 90 days of programs and support for survivors and their children, including food; clothing; personal care items; group and individual counseling; legal and social advocacy; employment assistance; and post-shelter life management skills. Longer-term transitional residency is also available for up to 2 years, offering the space to heal physically and emotionally and work on regaining self-sufficiency. The shelter is staffed 24-hours a day, 7 days a week. Transportation to the shelter is available anytime night or day. TRANSITIONAL HOUSING PROJECT: House of Ruth’s Transitional Housing Project provides survivors with the assistance and the opportunity to develop skills that will lead to permanent housing and increased income. Supportive Services include case management, housing advocacy and counseling, which focus on self-esteem and skills building. House of Ruth’s Transitional Service Project was implemented in 1997, and provides clients valuable services for 2 years. These services are provided to victims of domestic violence and their children who are homeless, residing in or exiting from emergency shelter. PERMANENT HOUSING: House of Ruth adopted the Housing First Model in 2018, providing permanent housing to survivors and their families along with case management and counseling services addressing barriers due to domestic violence and lack of housing support. The three basic tenants of this evidence-based model – Survivor-Driven, Trauma-Informed Mobile Advocacy; Flexible Financial Assistance; and Community Engagement – align with House of Ruth’s values and service model. CHILDREN’S PROGRAM: A five day a week program assists children at the shelter to reduce the trauma and self-blame they experience from witnessing domestic abuse at home or as victims of violence themselves. Counselors help children explore their feelings, learn alternatives to violence and constructively manage their anger. A certified tutor and bilingual aide are provided for children to continue their school work. CHILDREN’S COUNSELING: Long-term counseling is available to children who experience violence at home, in the community or at school. Referrals to this program may come from schools, community centers, or children may be identified through the outreach clinics serving their parent. Children will be accepted to this program based on their own experiences with violence and abuse, whose parent may or may not be involved with the shelter or other outreach services. YOUTH AND ADULT COUNSELING: Counseling services are conducted at the shelter and at the Pomona and Ontario Outreach Offices. Individual and group sessions use a Trauma Informed Approach to assist survivors as they explore their options, plan for a future free of violence, and develop methods to achieve the goals they have set. Counseling for children of survivors and teens affected by dating violence is also available. LEGAL ADVOCACY: Our legal advocate assists survivors with restraining orders, preparing court documents, court accompaniments, and more. House of Ruth has a collaborative partnership with local Pro Bono Attorney’s, providing free legal consultation to survivors including assistance with temporary restraining orders, divorce proceedings and child custody hearings. A team of pro-bono lawyers hold a monthly legal clinic in our Pomona Outreach Center. COMMUNITY OUTREACH WALK-IN CENTERS: Serving a diverse ethnic and economic community at two locations, House of Ruth provides a wide range of services for survivors of domestic violence. Services include group and individual counseling; legal and social advocacy; psycho-educational classes including Domestic Violence 101, Parenting, and Life Skills; information and referrals to other community and social services; emergency transportation; childcare; and a resource area with computers and printers available. COMMUNITY PREVENTION EDUCATION: House of Ruth Outreach Offices in Pomona and Ontario provide a wide range of services designed to break the cycle of abuse before it begins. Preventation Educators are available to speak before professional associations, employee groups, clubs, church groups, schools and other community organizations about healthy relationships, cycle of violence, self–esteem building, and warning flags of abuse among other topics. VOLUNTEERS: Volunteers play an important role at the House of Ruth. After completing the 44-hour domestic violence advocacy training, volunteers are prepared to work on the hotline, in outreach and at the shelter. Trainings are conducted two to three times a year. Our volunteers contribute the work of two full time staff members, and are critical to supporting our programs.
