Changing lives vulnerable communities as we share God's love and truth in words and actions.

About This Cause

Gogo Grandmothers supports the work of SAFE (Sub-Saharan Africa Family Enrichment) in Malawi Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world. SAFE is a local, faith-based Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) which partners with Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in Malawi to change the lives of vulnerable children (0-8) through parenting programs done at the household level, SAFE supported Community Based Child-care Centers, focusing on nutrition and literacy development, implemented at the center and household level through the engagement of community leaders and members. It has a multi-generational ministry to the young and old, through three distinct but synergistic programs: 1. Support for the gogos (grandmothers) caring for the majority of Malawi's orphans in rural villages including agriculture assistance, spiritual encouragement, psycho-social support, and physical assistance to improve the well-being of grandparents and enable them to effectively care for orphans and vulnerable children. 2. Early Childhood Development, through village community-based childcare centers by providing physical needs, psycho-social support, and parental training – to develop the learning abilities & holistic health of children, 0-8 years old. 3. Education and Youth Development activities, including WHY WAIT? Life skills training in schools and clubs, Mother Groups, mentoring/tutoring, and scholarship programs. SAFE was founded by an American couple, Dick and Charlotte Day who taught at Chancellor College in Zomba. It was registered in 1993, with the first focus being on addressing HIV&AIDS, and the first program being WHY WAIT? And Life Skills Education, carried out through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology (MoEST), in both primary and secondary schools. This education program continues, while SAFE has expanded into a greater community focus, starting with the establishment of Community-Based Childcare Centers (CBCCs) in partner-communities to run a holistic Early Childhood Development (ECD) program. Next followed the resulting development of the Gogo Grandmothers program to address the needs of the grandparents looking after orphans. Finally, arising from the ECD program developed the SAFE Life Youth Club program to build young leaders that serve their communities. SAFE is a registered member of the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA) and the Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) Board of Malawi. SAFE has a working relationship with each of the District Executive Committees (DECs) in those districts where it operates.
