Mission Statement
KYCC (Koreatown Youth and Community Center) was established in 1975 to support a growing population of at-risk youth in Los Angeles. Today, KYCC is the leading multiservice organization in Koreatown, supporting children and their families in the areas of education, health, housing, and finances. We believe that if the family is healthy, our community will thrive. KYCC is committed to making Koreatown a safe and beautiful place to live and work. The mission of KYCC is to serve the evolving needs of the Korean American population in the greater Los Angeles area as well as the multiethnic Koreatown community. KYCC’s programs and services are directed toward recently immigrated, economically disadvantaged youth and families, and promote community socioeconomic empowerment.
About This Cause
KYCC was founded in 1975 providing afterschool programs for recently immigrated at-risk youth. After the LA Uprising in 1992, KYCC expanded from being an exclusively ethnically focused agency to one that serves the entire the surrounding community of Koreatown. In 1994, KYCC developed our first affordable housing project on Wilton Place. In 2013, KYCC opened the 60-unit Menlo Family Apartments with comprehensive services provided to residents. In 2023, KYCC opened newly constructed Ambrose Apartments and Serenity Apartments for seniors in Los Angeles. All of KYCC's programs support our mission by improving the quality of life for children, youth and families in Koreatown and surrounding neighborhoods. • Kids Town Preschool provides early childhood education for children ages two to five years old. The center’s progressive philosophy emphasizes creative exploration in a developmentally appropriate environment, where children can learn, grow and develop at their own pace. Activities are designed to promote high self-esteem, independent learning and life-long feelings of competence. • Youth Services Unit offers both academic support and youth development services to children and youth (K-12th grade) in Koreatown and Pico Union. The academic support programs supplement education in the classroom and foster independent learning by providing year round afterschool programs for low-income children and youth to help them succeed in school. Youth development services provide life skills, leadership development and enrichment programs, for at-risk youth to become actively engaged community members. • Community Economic Development Unit offers a comprehensive financial case management program that provides wrap-around financial support – public benefits, free income tax services, credit, employment, and banking services – to promote financial stability of low-income clients. The program also includes developing financial action plans, resolving utility payments, and other services improve family financial security. KYCC also provides technical assistance to small businesses in Koreatown. In 2023, KYCC launched a FamilySource Center in the Wilshire area. • Housing Services provides intensive case management services and recovery re-housing subsidies for the unhoused population, tenant case management services, and includes 209 units of affordable housing and over new 180 units of permanent supportive housing for seniors and domestic violence families opening/opened in 2023 and 2024. • Clinical Services Unit provides comprehensive mental health services for at-risk youth and their parents, including individual and family therapy (outpatient, school-based and in-home), medication management, child abuse prevention and intervention, and parent education. Our Clinical Services Unit also conducts extensive outreach to the multi-ethnic communities of Koreatown and Korean speaking clients throughout Los Angeles County. • Recovery Services Unit provides outpatient substance use services, including individual, group and family counseling; crisis intervention; case management; recovery support services; information and referral; and drug screening. KYCC offers these services in Korean and Spanish to youth and adults in Koreatown. • Prevention Education Unit is successfully leading collaborations and partnerships through community engagement, education, leadership development, and capacity building for youth and parents, in areas such as substance abuse prevention, health equity issues, domestic violence prevention, tobacco control, and advocating for a safe and healthy community. We engage community youth and parent participants in Koreatown, Pico Union and Westlake. • Enhanced Care Management (ECM) Services provides intensive, whole-person centered case management to improve outcomes of children and adults enrolled in Medi-Cal facing complex medical and psychosocial challenges. • Environmental Services Unit envisions a safe, healthy and beautiful Koreatown and South Los Angeles. We provide tree planting, graffiti removal, and community clean up and promote resource conservation to improve urban neighborhoods where low-income and minority children and families live. KYCC promotes resource conservation and places emphasis on planting trees near schools and in urban areas that have little or no tree cover.
