Mission Statement
The P.F. Bresee Foundation’s (Bresee’s) mission is to battle poverty by empowering youth and families in Los Angeles with the skills, resources and relationships necessary to thrive.
About This Cause
Bresee battles poverty by empowering youth and families in Los Angeles with the skills, resources, and relationships necessary to thrive. Bresee serves the areas of Central Los Angeles which contains the densest neighborhoods west of the Mississippi River, with over 42,000 residents per square mile and 45% of those residents living below 150% of the federal poverty line. Additionally, 30%-40% of households in these areas indicate a total deficiency in English language and 42-53% of households indicate less than a high school education (American Community Survey 2018). As such, most of Bresee’s 9,000 families served annually regularly experience food insecurity, homelessness or home insecurity, domestic violence, limited access to technology, and a lack of healthy food options. To overcome these barriers, Bresee’s works collaboratively towards the following goals: • Youth Programs: To provide comprehensive afterschool programs for 1,500 middle and high school students that equip them with athletic, leadership, creative and workforce and college readiness skills. • Family Services: To provide intensive wrap-around support for the families of the youth Bresee serves and social and economic stability for the community at large, serving 2,000 low-income families annually. Services include ESL and computer classes, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, financial literacy classes, case management and emergency assistance. • Gang Prevention: To prevent the 150 most at-risk 10-15 year olds in the Rampart/Pico-Union area from joining a gang through the GRYD Model of Practice.
