Mission Statement
CARECEN empowers Central Americans and all immigrants by defending human and civil rights, working for social and economic justice and promoting cultural diversity.
About This Cause
The Central American Resource Center of California (CARECEN) is a community-based, nonprofit organization whose mission is to empower Central Americans and all immigrants by defending human and civil rights, working for social and economic justice, and promoting cultural diversity. CARECEN was founded by Salvadoran refugees and human rights activists in 1983 who worked to secure legal status for the thousands of Central Americans fleeing the brutality of the civil war. For the last 37 years, CARECEN has envisioned and actively worked towards a Los Angeles where Central Americans and all other communities live in peace and dignity, enjoying economic well-being, social justice, and political empowerment. We play a pivotal role in changing unjust immigration policies, delivering free immigration legal services, and developing grassroots leaders to support immigrant rights, education reform, and workers’ rights. The organization works toward the fulfillment of its mission by achieving the following goals: (1) To advocate for family legalization, citizenship, and family reunification, and provide quality immigration legal services to the immigrant community; (2) To provide community education and academic programs that focus on personal and professional development for immigrant families to foster leadership and self-reliance; and (3) To create an active network of socially conscious community members working together and with like-minded organizations to advocate for common issues and goals. Today, CARECEN is proud to be the largest Central American immigrant rights organization in the country. We serve 25,000 people every year, who are primarily low-income monolingual Spanish speaking Latino/a immigrants from Central America with low levels of formal education. They come to CARECEN in need of low-cost and reputable immigration legal services, access to employment and other human services, and connection to a supportive community and advocate. Our main office primarily serves residents of Central LA, which includes Pico-Union, Echo Park, Koreatown, as well as areas of downtown. Central LA residents suffer socio-economic disparities in comparison to residents county-wide.
