Mission Statement
Harambee seeks to nurture and equip leadership that will holistically minister to the community by sharing biblical truths in order to achieve the rebuilding of urban neighborhoods through relocation, reconciliation, and redistribution.
About This Cause
In 1982, Dr. John Perkins, a fiery preacher from Mississippi with a third grade education, gave the rallying cry to Christians from across the country. He had the audacity to believe that Christians could break the cycle of poverty if they were willing to relocate to the area of need, reconcile with God and each other, and bring resources to the underserved community. He asked people to come to Northwest Pasadena, California — a historically redlined community that was marginalized and under-resourced. It was one of the few places in Pasadena where people of color could purchase a home. A place where proud hard working families lived. A place where those that lost hope for advancement turned to violence and illegal activity. Dr. Perkins believed his neighbors held the answer. He surveyed a twelve block radius and asked his neighbors what they needed. They said they wanted a safe place for their children to go to after school. The ministry began there with the “felt needs of the community”. Dr. Perkins’ wife Vera Mae led the way with the Good News Club, and the Perkins children and a host of volunteers and interns from across the country began offering enrichment activities from tutoring, computer classes, t-shirt making, ESL classes, PUSH catering to eventually establishing Harambee Preparatory School (HPS) and Harambee Preschool. Our Programs Include: BUILD University "B.U" is our program where our high school scholars will have the opportunity to grow and develop in the exciting fields of music, film, fashion, and entrepreneurship to name a few. B.U. is designed to help them discover their passions and cultivate their talents, while also providing valuable leadership and life skills. Scholars will work with experienced instructors and fellow participants to learn new techniques and strategies. They will have the chance to put their skills into practice through hands-on projects and exercises. By the end of the 10 sessions, scholars will have gained valuable knowledge and experience that will help them pursue their dreams and make a transformative impact in the world. One of those exciting ways is that our scholars will go on a Southern Civil Rights Tour, an immersive experience anchored in storytelling that engages scholars in the past, places, and people of the centuries-long fight for civil rights and human dignity. The second way is that these students will have the opportunity to participate in our Junior Summer Staff Program where we will focus on job readiness and personal responsibility. Harambee “After The Bell” Harambee After The Bell is addressing the needs of our community by providing a safe space for students to be after school. We are building positive relationships between the student population and our Harambee Youth Advocates. Through team building, athletics, performing arts enrichment, games, and academic support, we are sowing into tomorrow's leaders today. We understand that the scholastic well-being of our children is a high priority, but we also believe in prioritizing the holistic development of those in our care.
