Mission Statement

Founded in 1985, we are a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing childhood burns and serving severely burned children and their families.

About This Cause

Children's Burn Foundation provides child burn survivors and their families with comprehensive healing, from life-transforming surgeries to psychological support until the child is 18 years old. CBF has provided care to children with severe burns, who, because of a lack of financial resources and/or medical insurance, cannot otherwise benefit from state-of-the-art medical treatment and muchneeded post-acute services. In 2023-24 we project to treat over 4200 children and families who have experienced life-altering severe burns. We will provide comprehensive care beginning at the time of hospitalization. During this initial phase we also provide family support for accommodations, transportation and food. Once out of acute care, we provide continuing surgical care and psychosocial emotional care. These children have nowhere else to turn. We service children locally, nationally and internationally. Our support is not restricted by location or hospital. In an instant a child's life is altered by a severe burn. They do not know how to navigate an uncertain future riddled with pain, shame, disfigurement. CBF steps in to renew their faith in a positive future with restorative surgeries and providing support groups and events with other burn survivors. Our children exit our programs after their 18th year and go on to be positive, contributing members of their communities. Our kids don't just survive, they embrace life and survive. We give them the tools to cope and find resilience. The realities that these children face are extremely challenging as they learn to cope with their new vision of the future. We champion the underdog and believe that with supportive physical and emotional care, these children can meet their full potential. The demand for our services is at an all-time high and we look to local funders like yourselves to partner with us in giving these kids the best chance so they can thrive in our community. The target population served by the Children’s Burn Foundation programs is predominately young children who are 90% socioeconomically disadvantaged. The diversity of the population we serve is 46% Hispanic, 31% African American, 15% Caucasian, and 8% Asian. Children impacted from the Southern California area are able to attend our biweekly support groups, holiday gatherings and Camp Gung Ho. Almost 4,200 children were aided through the Full Recovery Program, the most intensive direct services offered by the organization and designed to meet the immediate and long-term needs of child burn survivors and their families. Our goal is to never turn away a child who has been severely burned and needs assistance. We believe that these children can become vibrant members of their community with our assistance. We have serviced this population for over 30 years and know that access to medical care and emotional support are key to giving a child back their life. We treat the entire family when a child is burned and help them throughout their childhood. Our Full Recovery Program is comprehensive in giving a care plan to families once the accident has occurred. These brave children endure so much pain, usually from an accident that could have been prevented. Shame, guilt, suffering, financial strain and loss of friendships typically plague a survivor. We treat children as close to home as possible to ensure family cohesion. The program includes acute, lifesaving, functionality and reconstructive surgeries for children in California and across the globe. Many medical and restorative procedures are not covered by insurance. Our child life facilitators help family navigate the complex and often unknown road to recovery. In some areas, medical airlifts are used to bring patients to the best facility. Young burn survivors’ lives are transformed through specialized care that involves the whole family. Their emotional needs are met with therapy, while families rely on our support for food, housing and transportation assistance. Socialization with other burn survivors and their families is an integral part of treatment, as they learn to navigate through the recovery process. Camp Gung Ho is a treasured tradition of day camps in the Greater Los Angeles area with fun-filled adventures for young burn survivors and their siblings. Camp allows burn survivors to connect with friends in a safe place to explore new activities and build trusted friendships. Participants feel a sense of joy and camaraderie where campers expand their physical capabilities and social connections. Family/Child Support Groups Certified child life specialists and social workers guide these families in support groups designed specifically towards to face their unique challenges.Participation in these groups provides a transformative and bonding experience for children and their parents. Teen Support Groups The teen program specializes in adolescents as they transition into adulthood. The group forms tight bonds as they tackle the challenges of their differences and the complex emotions of being a teenager and navigating their limitations. This empowering program coaches teens not just to survive but to thrive. This groundbreaking program serves as a model to other burn units around the country. When people feels respected and included they are more creative and successful. Our children are physically and emotionally disabled from their injury. When they participate in our programs like camp and therapy groups, they learn to reshape their future and positively frame their life as a burn survivor. They gain the respect of their peers ans communities are stronger by interacting with our resilient, strong and brave kids who may look a little different, but have gained a lifetime of maturity to tackle the world. When the community has positive role models of disabled children, they become more accepting of those who are different. Our school reintegration program successfully helps children return to school helps explain to their peers how to include them in their school community.
