Mission Statement
The LA Conservation Corps' primary mission is to provide at-risk young adults and school-aged youth with opportunities for success through job skills training, education and work experience with an emphasis on conservation and service projects that benefit the community.
About This Cause
The LA Conservation Corps is an environmentally focused youth development organization. From seven different sites around the greater LA area, we unleash the power of youth to preserve natural resources on the coast and in the forests and mountains surrounding Los Angeles. Corpsmembers make Los Angeles’ underserved urban neighborhoods better places to live, work, learn, and play. In the course of restoring the environment and serving their communities, youth are empowered to chart their own courses toward rising out of poverty. Too many young folks in Los Angeles are having a hard time finding a job. Maybe they came from one of Los Angeles’ poor neighborhoods, and the schools didn’t prepare them for the job market. Maybe they came from a broken home, or their family has been shattered by drugs or violence. Maybe they didn’t have any family and aged out of the foster system. Maybe they were in juvie, and their record blocks their chances. Some young adults are forced to choose between staying in school or getting a job to support their families, and by settling for a low-wage job now, they stunt any opportunities for growth in the future. They want to make a positive change in their lives, and they find the Los Angeles Conservation Corps. During their time in our Young Adult Corps program, Corpsmembers gain knowledge and skills that will get them a high-wage job and build a career. If they didn’t finish high school, then they can earn the credits they need to get a high school diploma, which opens up future prospects in college or vocational school. Through our Green Career Pathways program, they can connect now with hot jobs in green sectors. Case managers are there to help Corpsmembers set goals and stay on track. Food, housing, and transportation assistance is there, so nothing gets in the way of their dreams. Legal aid is available, so they can move forward. The Corpsmember experience can last up to two years. In the first year, they gain general work experience, and the power of youth is unleashed to make Los Angeles cleaner and greener: planting trees to clean pollution from the air, building parks so children have a place to play, planting community gardens to bring people together, reducing fire fuel to protect people and property, and recycling beverage containers to conserve resources and divert waste from landfills. In the second year, Corpsmembers select their Green Career Pathway—urban forestry, recycling, clean energy, sustainable construction, or alternative transportation/manufacturing. Work experience becomes specific to the pathway, specialized skills training and industry-recognized certifications become available, and the Corps’ transition specialists will help them get them apprenticeships and jobs in their career path. Corpsmembers’ work experiences inspire them to become stewards of the environment from the San Fernando Valley to Compton and everywhere in between. After recycling tons of water bottles, our Corpsmembers switch to refillable containers, because they see firsthand how bottles clutter city streets and poison waterways. Not only are they working, they are working for their community. We work with employer partners to connect out-of-work and out-of-school youth with careers. Employer partners help us develop competency models for trades that may not have formalized ways in. Based on these competency models, the Green Career Pathways framework organizes the Corpsmember experience, so they have the skillsets they need to be competitive for in-demand jobs in growing green sectors. Employer partners tell us the experience, skills, and certifications that Corpsmembers should have to be competitive for entry-level jobs and build careers. They offer tours of facilities and work sites, and they offer job shadowing and apprenticeships, so Corpsmembers can be well informed about the choices they could make. We work with our friends in key industries to bridge the skills gap and close the distance between the end of training and the first day on the job.
