Mission Statement

We build capacity for communities, students, and future leaders to advocate for nature, climate, and equity on the Los Angeles River.

About This Cause

The Los Angeles River is the birthplace of our region and was once the thriving, unifying water source for the people and wildlife of Los Angeles. But that connection and our collective history were severed when the River was encased in concrete and fenced in 1938. In an act of civil disobedience, poet-activist Lewis MacAdams took the first steps to repair that severed connection in 1986 when he cut a hole in the chain-link fence that obstructed Angelenos from their rightful River. He declared the River open to the people and swore to serve as its voice. And so, Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR) and the River Movement were born. Rivers play an essential role in our environment. FoLAR has endeavored for nearly 40 years to restore community connection and natural ecology as the single largest unifying force on the River – educating, empowering, and mobilizing over 80,000 Angelenos to implement solutions that protect our communities and the LA River for generations to come. We envision a verdant Los Angeles River that supports vulnerable communities in climate adaptation. The river will be transformed into a dynamic, functioning ecosystem that reduces flood risk, cleans the air, cools temperatures, and supports the biodiversity essential to our collective wellbeing. In our pursuit to preserve and restore the LA River, we aim for continuous climate-resilient open space and an enhanced ecosystem in support of holistic and nature-prioritized planning efforts. Vital to our pursuit is the engagement and education of the surrounding community. We educate the community through habitat restoration and education events, volunteer opportunities, digital communications, and our STEM-based K-12 environmental education programs that we deliver to LA schools (approx 6,000 students per year), focusing on Title I schools and underserved communities. We further education and emphasize engagement through the Annual Great LA River CleanUp, the most extensive urban cleanup in the nation. For over 30 years, CleanUp has combined to remove over 1.6 million pounds of trash that would otherwise end up in the ocean.
