Mission Statement
Students Run LA (SRLA) creates a safe, supportive community at 185+ public schools, welcoming more than 3,200 students of all backgrounds and abilities to train alongside their volunteer teachers to complete the Los Angeles Marathon. Through this life-changing experience, SRLA students discover their best selves, learn how to set and achieve personal and academic goals, and develop the resiliency to overcome life’s obstacles.
About This Cause
SRLA is in the business of changing the trajectory of young people’s lives, especially those who’ve got the odds stacked against them. We do that by challenging them to do something less than 1% of the population will ever do – run a 26.2-mile marathon – and then helping them achieve it, giving students the opportunity to realize the rewards of such a singular accomplishment. Each year, SRLA welcomes 3,200 middle and high school students from 185 public schools and community programs in predominantly low-income communities of color across Greater Los Angeles to train alongside their teachers to complete the LA Marathon, learning along the way that if they can run a marathon, they can do anything! Over 30+ years, our consistent annual results are striking: • 99% of students who start the Marathon, finish it. But that’s just the beginning, as Kenia from Manual Arts H.S. recently explained: If I had not been part of SRLA or run any marathons, I would not have been as confident and ready to take on a challenge like I am now. It made me realize that if I can do a marathon as a teenager, imagine all the other goals and dreams I can fulfill if I believe in myself. The self-confidence gained through SRLA leads to the pursuit of higher academic goals: • 99% of SRLA seniors who finish the Marathon graduate high school; • 95% of these students have plans to attend college; and • 75% of those students are among the first-generation of their families to go to college. To help students achieve their academic goals, SRLA offers scholarships to graduating seniors through the SRLA Scholarship and Honda Dream Scholarship programs. Most students who receive these scholarships had not thought that college was possible before they participated in SRLA. These scholarships, though small, provide critically needed funds for books, tuition, and other expenses, for students without other resources.
