Mission Statement

The Robey Theatre Company's mission is to foster a community of artists whose purpose is to develop and produce plays written about the global Black experience.

About This Cause

Founded in 1994, the organization began as a readers’ theatre centering on classics. The brainchild of theatre veterans and friends, Ben Guillory and Danny Glover The Robey Theatre Company was incorporated in 1996 as a professional company of artists who believed in the transformational power of plays – specifically, plays that would tell the vital and complex stories of the global black experience. Since inception, the organization has dedicated its work to developing original plays and supporting emerging playwrights. This effort has produced multiple award-winning stage plays. The Robey Theatre Company has served as the training ground for some of the nations most recognized actors and launched extraordinary careers. The organization continues to expand its reach, while remaining committed to its founding purpose of developing original works. What’s in a Name? Inspired by the renowned artist and activist, Paul Robeson – Robey as he was affectionately known to his friends – for more than twenty-five year, the organization would serve the Los Angeles Arts Community as curators of socially conscious theatre productions and foster a community of creatives through acting workshops, playwriting labs, staged readings, and productions reflecting its mission and purpose. About the Robey Creative Process The Robey Theatre Company (Robey) is led by Co-founder and Producing Artistic Director, Ben Guillory. For the past 12 years, Robey has operated out of the Los Angeles Theatre Center in DTLA. A Non-Equity House, the organization offers limited-run productions – with 99 and 50 seat capacity and the occasional Equity production with theatre partners. This model allows the organization to offer classical theatre as well as serve as an incubator for new and experimental original works. In addition to theatrical productions, the organization offers Workshops and Labs using Robey’s intensive creative process that is designed to support the work of creatives and artists. ➢ Playwright’s Lab works with established and emerging playwrights to develop ideas into viable stage plays ➢ Advanced Scene Study Workshop assists actors in developing their craft through the study and practice of theatrical disciplines – voice, speech, movement, analysis and human behavior ➢ Staged Readings is where the developmental process continues in its march from the page to the stage. The playwright is able, in this step, to hear the work and work collaboratively – along with the input of dramaturg, director, actors, designers, technicians, the rehearsal process and the audience – to bring the script to life. ➢ The Paul Robeson Theatre Festival Launched in 2014, the three-day, biannual short play festival inspired by the actor and activist, Paul “Robey” Robeson. The festival serves as an homage to Robeson and features the works of emerging and established playwrights. The Festival provides a space and opportunity for artists to display and cultivate their craft. Play submissions should reflect Robeson’s values, principles and commitment to social consciousness. These hallmark programs – Playwrights Lab, Advanced Scene Study Workshop, Staged Readings, and The Paul Robeson Theatre Festival – are the heart and soul of The Robey Theatre Company and represent what the organization is about The Robey Theatre Company is a federally designated 501 (c) 3 Tax Exempt Organization.
