Mission Statement

Our mission is to promote greater inclusion for people with disabilities globally, through mobility, therapy, advocacy and empowerment.

About This Cause

For nearly 30 years, Momentum Wheels for Humanity (Wheels for Humanity) has been expanding access to high-quality assistive products and services where the need is greatest. We have worked in over 70 low- and middle-income countries, distributing life-transforming wheelchairs and other mobility aids, training local healthcare professionals, and helping to build sustainable health systems that can serve all people. Wheels for Humanity is one of the only organizations in the world with expertise in developing both rehabilitation and assistive technology services. Since 1996, our work has touched hundreds of thousands of lives and paved the way for more inclusive futures. • 1,758 hospitals, health centers, and disabled people’s organizations supported • 9,001 professionals trained • 155,712 mobility aids provided • 715,298 lives impacted in more than 70 countries In 2024, thanks to partners like you, our work impacted more than 104,000 people in 26 countries. By providing high-quality assistive products, training rehabilitation professionals to international standards, and advocating for the meaningful inclusion of people with disabilities, we help individuals achieve their full potential. We are a trusted partner of a wide range of stakeholders, including country governments, multilateral agencies, and international organizations, such as the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, Humanity and Inclusion (HI), Google.org, and many more. Our strategy includes three pillar program areas: 1. Inclusive Disaster Preparedness and Response 2. Assistive Technology Supply and Provision 3. Strengthening Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Services In 2024, we worked in El Salvador to bolster the resilience of people with disabilities before, during, and after emergencies by building regional and national capacity for disability-inclusive disaster risk reduction, response, and recovery. Wheels for Humanity has worked in Ukraine for over 25 years. Since the conflict with Russia began in 2014, we have been working to meet increased demand and to create quality, sustainable systems for generations to come, we expanded rehabilitation services and built workforce capacity in Ukraine. Tajikistan has only a handful of physical therapists in the country and no educational institution offering degrees in physical therapy. Since 2019, we have worked to develop a strong rehabilitation workforce in Tajikistan, aligning physical therapy education with international standards by developing the country’s first-ever entry-level physical therapy program and ensuring that teachers are equipped with the clinical skills and knowledge necessary to train Tajikistan’s next generation of rehabilitation professionals. Our work in Pakistan and Uganda has addressed the immense need for AT by integrating rehabilitation and assistive products into local health systems by supporting new service delivery models and training in wheelchair service provision. Our Emergency Assistive Technology (AT) Preparedness Project is critical to improving access to essential, life-changing mobility aids and self-care products for people with disabilities and injuries during humanitarian crises. For 10 years, we’ve been working to increase global access to appropriate mobility aids through CLASP, a social enterprise that sells a diverse range of high-quality and affordable assistive products to governments, distributors, international organizations, and NGOs, including rapid response to urgent humanitarian emergencies. Why it matters: An estimated 70 million people globally need wheelchairs but do not have access to them. Approximately 2.4 billion people—or one in three—have conditions that would benefit from physical rehabilitation. (Source: WHO, 2024) Access to assistive products and physical rehabilitation services is deeply inequitable. In some low-income countries, as few as 3% of people were reported to have access to the assistive products they need, compared to 90% in some high-income countries. Emergencies—such as conflicts, natural disasters, and disease outbreaks—further widen these gaps, driving demand while also disrupting services. (Source: The WHO and UNICEF Global Report on Assistive Technology, 2022) Without mobility, people with disabilities face significant barriers to education, employment, and social inclusion, trapping them in a cycle of poor health and poverty, especially in low- and middle-income countries. When people gain access to the care and tools that improve their physical independence, they can meaningfully participate in society. This not only elevates their quality of life but also benefits their families and communities.
