Mission Statement

Step Up believes all girls should have the opportunity to pursue their dreams of success.

About This Cause

At Step Up, we believe education has the power to help every young woman pursue their dreams of success. Girls in the United States, particularly girls of color living in underserved communities, face significant barriers to equity. Nationwide about 9 million at-risk youth will turn 19 without ever having had a mentor, and are much less likely to reach important milestones like high school and college graduation.  To transcend the obstacles Step Up girls face, we build skills in self-efficacy and resilience, create access to opportunities, mentorship, and life-long community and support. Step Up girls, 97% of whom identify as being a woman of color, represent a multitude of races, ethnicities and identities, all emboldened through meaningful mentoring relationships to use their voices and skills to address inequities, reject racism, and build coalitions that strengthen their abilities to be future leaders. Step Up welcomes all girls and gender-expansive teens and young adults, ages 14-23, who may be facing systematic barriers. Through programs rooted in social-emotional learning, mentorship, career practice, and building community and connections, Step Up will advance and transform the lives of girls and young women facing systematic barriers by providing the developmental relationships and experiences needed to gain the access, opportunity, and tools needed to cultivate foundational skills critical to postsecondary success.
