Mission Statement
California Black Women’s Health Project is the only 501(c)(3) non-profit organization solely dedicated to improving the health of California's Black women and girls through advocacy, education, policy, and outreach. We are committed to advocating for policies and practices that promote and improve physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being. We believe a healthier future is possible when women are empowered to make choices in an environment where equal access and health justice are community priorities. Our work spans health from preconception to aging, and geography from San Diego to Sacramento.
About This Cause
We are committed to advocating for policies and practices that promote and improve the physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional well-being of the 1.2 million Black women and girls in California. We seek to empower women to become active participants in improving our health status through advocacy, outreach, education, and training. We take a health-in-all, mental health-in-all, and reparatory health justice approach to our work. Our efforts are geographically concentrated in the 4 California regions with the highest population of Black women and girls – Los Angeles, Alameda, and Sacramento counties, and the Inland Empire (Riverside & San Bernardino counties). Our work is critically necessary to address the complex factors that predispose to, or create risk for chronic disease, depressive disorders, physical and emotional injury, and other conditions that exacerbate poor health in Black women & girls. Social and system determinates of health inordinately have an adverse impact on the health and well-being of Black women and families. We believe a healthier future is possible when Black women and girls are empowered to make choices in an environment where equal access and health justice are community priorities. CALIFORNIA BLACK WOMEN’S HEALTH PROJECT (CABWHP) designs and delivers programs that emphasize advocacy and engagement as critical strategies for changing individual, family, community and cultural norms around health. We emphasize policy change, education and engagement as a blended approach to eliminating access barriers and health outcome disparities, beginning with Black women and girls. We emphasize both advocacy and policy as strategies to encourage increased diversity in health professions and expanded access to culturally competent care for Black communities. The organization’s proactive tactics include the expansion of our proven training programs for Black women, extending this training to younger women, the continued use of education, and outreach and awareness campaigns to promote health improvement. We are committed to intentional collaboration to develop and support policies aimed at reducing health disparities in the Black community, beginning with Black women and girls. CABWHP’s theory of change is driven by 5 guiding values that form the foundation of our efforts: EQUITY - In opportunities, access, and resources – (ensuring that Black women and girls are never overlooked in their pursuit of quality health and wellness by the systems of health and wellness care) EMPOWERMENT - Emphasizing individual responsibility and interpersonal support via a Sister Circle model of engagement, we empower Black women and girls to improve their health and wellness using a proactive approach BLACK WOMEN-CENTERED - We are unapologetic about advocating on the premise of intrinsic value in the history and heritage of Black women, employing culturally competent interventions that are relevant, appropriate and effective. CHANGE - We operate as a lever for change in community conditions, health disparities, individual behaviors & policies that impact health and wellness. COLLABORATION - 100% of programming efforts are centered on partnership and a fundamental belief that collective engagement is essential to effective prevention and early intervention. CALIFORNIA BLACK WOMEN’S HEALTH PROJECT - WHAT WE DO ► TRAIN Black women to become community health advocates through skills-based instruction in strategic organizing, planning, and engagement. ► INFORM women about disease (including heart, cancer, diabetes, and HIV/AIDS), violence (domestic/intimate partner), nutrition/fitness, mental health, reproductive health, menopause, and other health issues from a Black perspective. ► ADVOCATE for policies that address the social determinates of health and aim to eliminate the disparity in Black women’s health status. ► EMPOWER community-based organizations with workshops, programs, and data about Black women’s health issues.
