Mission Statement

To assist community based organizations in achieving their development goals in an equitable, sustainable and environmentally friendly way.

About This Cause

WCDP was founded in 1999 by John Ahrens, a former Peace Corps Volunteer serving in Uganda. The purpose was to support community based organizations in Uganda. WCDP incorporated in 2003 and received IRS 503c3 certification in 2008. Some of our key successes were helping the Kasolwe community in Uganda to build a community based primary school, and to assist the Buhoma community in Uganda to install solar panels, lighting and battery storage at their community owned high school. WCDP is looking to develop a community certification system, called Harmony Villages, that honors communities that meet criteria to demonstrate their commitment to six key principles of Sustenance, Sanctuary, Resources, Enjoyment, Prosperity and Appreciation. WCDP is also exploring bringing some of their work home to the United States, with particular emphasis on the City of Detroit as they emerge from decades of decline with aspirations of becoming a city of the future. WCDP would look to support residents obtain affordable housing as property owners, support green energy goals through community solar and microgrids, and assist business development to promote job creation and small business ownership.
