Mission Statement
Youth Tennis San Diego is a nonprofit (501)(c)(3) organization whose purpose is to promote the educational, physical, and social development of all youth through organized tennis and educational activities. YTSD community programs encourage youth participation, and focus on personal integrity, leadership, and developing a competitive spirit in a friendly environment that builds responsible citizens.
About This Cause
Providing access to premier tennis training and facilities for all in our on-site and off-site programming, we believe tennis can help uplift those children from the most underserved areas in our community. At YTSD, our youth programs have always been the priority, and we believe this should be a model for the rest of the country. Through 50 weeks each year, our 55 instructors deliver hundreds of thousands of hours of on-court programming between our After School Tennis, junior clinics, summer camps, and beginner, intermediate, and high-performance/professional player development programs. With the addition of over 50 junior Sectional, National, UTR, and ITA tournaments held at our campus, we serve tens of thousands of juniors annually. In 2021 alone, the number of new registrants in YTSD programs was 1,326. Over the past 32 years, YTSD has given hundreds of thousands of disadvantaged youth across San Diego County access to tennis through its signature outreach effort: the Kathy Willette Chabot After School Tennis (AST) program. YTSD partners with the San Diego Unified School District and the Parks and Recreation Departments for the cities of San Diego, Chula Vista, and National City to bring AST to San Diego youth, elementary, and middle school students at their schools or nearby parks and recreation sites. Teachers are given training in tennis instruction and the equipment to teach their classes, and over 90% of students receive need-based scholarships from YTSD to participate. AST provides a pathway for youth to grow their interest in tennis with financial support. AST sites are strategically located in neighborhood school clusters to ensure that tennis is available to youth as they progress from elementary to middle school. Program participants are invited to play in quarterly singles and doubles round-robin tournaments at the Barnes Tennis Center, a 25-court tennis and education center, and recipient of the USTA's 2021 Facility of the Year Award, which is owned and operated by YTSD. Transportation and lunch are provided. A key component of our AST program is the opportunity for advancement and scholarships for further tennis training. As part of our Junior Tennis Underwriting Master Plan (J.U.M.P.), we have laid out a pathway for player development that begins with AST participants being invited to play in L7 and Junior Circuit beginner tournaments at Barnes Tennis Center with no entry fees (standard tournament entry fees are around $55). After competing in L7/Junior Circuit beginner tournaments at Barnes, the AST students can apply for scholarships to enroll in our junior clinics and higher-level training programs at the Steve Adamson Tennis Academy. We have had many students from this pathway go on to become nationally ranked players. earn college scholarships, and turn professional. Stories like these fuel our passion for our work and drive our desire to expand the reach of our programs. Recently, we unveiled the Inspire360 Digital Learning Lab at the Booth Education Center—a part of the Barnes Center, which will provide access to technology, virtual laboratories, and courses in tech skills like coding or virtual design for children and adults in the community. Currently, over 100,000 children in San Diego County lack access to WiFi, which is a significant barrier to educational attainment and socioeconomic mobility. The Inspire360 Digital Learning Lab was created for the express purpose of providing internet and technological access to all children, helping to put them on equal footing in the Digital Age.
