Mission Statement

Beyond Blindness empowers children with visual impairments and other disabilities to achieve their fullest potential.

About This Cause

Beyond Blindness was founded in 1962 under the original name Blind Children's Learning Center. The organization launched its latest service chapter under the new name and brand, Beyond Blindness (BB). After 60 years, BB continues to foster a spirit of independence and integration into the sighted world by serving as the primary resource to families of children with visual impairments and other disabilities. A record 380 individuals and 180 families received services this past year. We are proud of our platinum rating from GuideStar and four-star rating through Charity Navigator for accountability and transparency. Our current strategic plan has the exciting goal of positioning Beyond Blindness as the go-to provider for blind and visually impaired children and expanding our capacity to serve 2,680 children and families throughout the Greater Orange County area by the end of FY27. Beyond Blindness will achieve this goal through three primary areas of focus: 1) Early Intervention - BB will be the leading comprehensive early intervention provider for all children with visual impairments, vision concerns, and other disabilities in Greater Orange County. 2) Education and Enrichment - All children with visual impairments or vision concerns and other disabilities will have greater access to the resources and tools needed to succeed, including access to Teachers of the Visually Impaired, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, and other trainings to meet expanded core curriculum goals. 3) Family Support - BB families will be an engaged, supported, empowered, and connected community of families, reducing barriers and improving outcomes for their children. To achieve these goals and objectives, BB will strengthen and expand its revenue diversification, strategic partnerships, and advocacy BB has designed the following core programs to establish a high-quality "journey of care" for children and their families from birth through 22 years of age. Early Intervention - Services for children (0 to 3 years) provide home-based early intervention and vision stimulation to help children meet important developmental milestones. Additionally, therapy services (speech, physical and occupational) minimize delays and optimize development for an independent future, while toddler classrooms, located onsite, focus on healthy development and school readiness. 94% of children met measurable goals in key developmental areas, and 53% more children attended toddler classrooms this past year. Education + Enrichment - Services for students (3 to 22 years) who have transitioned into local public-school classrooms. They receive itinerant support from a dedicated Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Orientation & Mobility training, assistive technology training, and the opportunity to attend fun and valuable summer camps. As a result, over 85% of students met vision, mobility, or academic goals this past year. Family Support - Services offer necessary and comforting support to parents, grandparents, siblings, children, and more through education & training and inclusive family events. These events also help provide guidance, a sense of community, and more. As a result, 100% of parents expressed increased confidence in including their children in social and recreational activities to decrease isolation and develop essential skills.
